AH Man Dies After Fall In County Jail
A 58-year-old Arlington Hts. man died at 1 a.m. Thursday morning (July 31) at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Chicago of injuries he suffered after falling in his cell earlier in the week in the Cook County jailhouse.
Patrick Kolman, of the 100 block of S. Vail Ave. in Arlington Heights was in jail, unable to pay a $150,000 bond ($15,000 cash), awaiting trial on felony drunken driving charges after his arrest on Wednesday, July 2 in Arlington Heights.
Kolman's charges were upgraded to a class X felony as he had nine prior convictions for DUI and was driving on a revoked license, police said.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's office said Kolman's cause of death was a fall, a seizure and a cerebral contusion (a bruised brain).
Cook County Sheriff's Police spokesman Steve Patterson told the Journal that at noon on Friday, July 25, Kolman was found on the floor of the cell he occupied alone in need of medical treatment.
Corrections officers brought Kolman to Cermak Hospital on the grounds of the jail. At about 2:20 p.m. that same day jail doctors recommended Kolman be transferred to Mt. Sinai for his injuries.
Patterson said Kolman's cell was open at the time of the incident but said jail officials felt the fall from his bed was due to a medical condition and not foul play.
Patterson said jail officials consider the matter closed and will not conduct any further investigation into the incident.
