Clearbrook's Jelly Belly Days will be held Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17, from 6:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m.at various storefronts and intersections throughout Chicago and surrounding suburbs. More than one thousand yellow-vested volunteers will trade the signature gourmet jelly beans for a donation during Rolling Meadows-based Clearbrook's 19th annual event. Nearly 3,000 children and adults with developmental disabilities supported by Clearbrook will benefit from this major fundraising event. On Saturday, May 17, area residents will lace up their walking shoes and pound the pavement towards a cure for cystic fibrosis (CF) at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's annual Great Strides Walk-A-Thon, being held at Busse Woods, Grove 5-16. Participants are raising money to benefit the more than 1,000 families in the Chicago metropolitan area who are waging a daily battle against CF, the most common life-threatening genetic disease in the United States, affecting 30,000 children and adults. In addition, more than 10 million Americans are genetic carriers for the disease. Great Strides is the CF Foundation's largest national event. The Elk Grove Garden Club's May meeting will be on the "Gardens of Claude 'ĮMonet" in Giverny, France. The Elk Grove Rotary Club is hosting its annual Battle of the Bands competition during Rotaryfest which runs June 11-15 at Lions Park. Bands wanting to compete must be local, up and coming groups that play original music. A committee will select four bands from the CD submissions and those bands will play on the main stage Wednesday, June 11, at 6, 7, 8 and 9. A panel of judges will vote on the performances and the top two bands will move to the final round on Sunday evening. The breakdown of prize money is: 1st-$500, 2nd-$250, 3rd-$150, 4th-$100. In addition, the 1st placed band will earn a spot for next year's fest. The deadline to enter is May 16.

The Polish Women's Civic Club invites you and your friends to its Installation Luncheon at the Fountain Blue, 2300 South Mannheim Rd. in Des Plaines, on May 19. Join the club at 11 a.m. for cocktails and a Spring Boutique hosted by local businesses, followed by lunch at 12:30 p.m. The installation of new officers and induction of new members will take place after lunch. The Prospect Heights Garden Club is celebrating its 10th Anniversary and for 'Įthe tenth year the club will be hosting its Perennial Plant Sale. This sale 'Įis expected to feature over 100 varieties of perennial plants and will take place on Saturday, May 17 at the Prospect Crossing Shopping Center at Rand 'Įand Willow roads. From 8 a.m.-noon, plant lovers will assemble on the north end of the parking lot 'Įacross from John Hersey High School. All members of the garden club have 'Įbeen busy preparing for this annual event, planting and nurturing these 'Įperennials in their home gardens. As an added highlight the club will have available for sale hand-painted birdhouses, beautifully designed 'Įsilk flower wreaths, successful houseplants, and handmade rain barrels. 'ĮFunds generated from this sale benefit Dollar for Scholars, civic locations, parks and the preservation and conservation of Hillcrest Lake in Prospect Heights. Ralph Beaudoin will speak on "Online Genealogy Tutorials" at the next meeting of the Northwest Suburban Council of Genealogists to be held on Tuesday, May 20, at 7:30 p.m. at Forest View Educational Center, Room 100, 2121 S. Goebbert Rd., Arlington Heights. Genealogists are one of the largest users of the Internet, but not everyone is aware of the many educational tools available to them. Beaudoin will discuss various resources he has found online where you can learn new genealogical skills that allow you to access additional sources in searching your family's history.

La Leche League, a breastfeeding support group, will meet on Thursday, May 8, at Holy Family Medical Center, 100 N. River Road in Des Plaines at 7:30 p.m. to discuss the normal course of breastfeeding. Expecting and nursing mothers (and their babies) are invited to attend. Individual questions and concerns will also be addressed. La Leche League is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization which helps mothers who want to breastfeed through education, encouragement & mother to mother support. Clergy, candidates and color are topics of discussion during "The Wright Stuff," an open forum, hosted by Elk Grove Baptist Church, Sunday, May 18, at 7 p.m. This public forum will focus on questions on Christianity, politics and race raised by recent comments by Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Sen. Barack Obama. The evening begins at 6 p.m. with the traditional potluck dinner between the congregations. Doors open to the public at 6:45 for the forum. There is no admission charge for the forum. Individuals interested in attending dinner must reserve a spot by Tuesday, May 12. Stage
Second Suburb Players announces auditions, rehearsals and performances (and behind-the-scenes opportunities) for "Anything Goes," its upcoming spring production. Those age 14-20 (13 with reference) interested in participating are sought. Auditions will be held May 19-20, with callbacks May 21-22. Rehearsals are May 27-July 10, with performances July 11-20 at Cutting Hall, 150 E. Wood St., Palatine. Contact the Players in advance to schedule an audition appointment, to inquire about possible additional alternate audition dates/times, or for any other additional information. Walk-ins will be welcome, but will be taken as (and if) there is time. Audition appointments may last from 45 minutes to an hour.
