Speed Enforcement Program Back In Action
The Arlington Heights Police Dept. is participating in a Speed Enforcement Program (SEP) from Sunday, Apr. 6 through Sept. 20 to deter motorists from committing speed violations.
Through increased enforcement of speed related laws, the purpose of the SEP is to reduce speeding related motor vehicle crashes, along with injuries and fatalities that may occur,
In order to achieve this purpose, the following goals of the program have been defined:
* To reduce the number of speed related crashes.
* To increase enforcement of speed laws.
* To increase compliance with posted speed limit.
Arlington Heights Police will conduct six one-month consecutive enforcement campaigns at four high-speed locations. The four locations are intersections based on 2005 Illinois Dept. of Transportation (IDOT) Crash Statistics within the Village of Arlington Heights.
The intersections and areas of enforcement selected for purposes of the SEP are as follows:
* Algonquin Road and Arlington Heights Road
* Palatine Road at Rand Road
* Palatine Road at Arlington Heights Road
* Northwest Hwy. at Euclid Avenue
Speed enforcement efforts will be conducted primarily during weekdays during the morning and evening rush hour periods.
According to police, the goal is to make certain that everyone knows they are more at risk of suffering a serious injury or death if they do not follow the rules of the road.
This program is being utilized by funds from IDOT's Division of Traffic Safety.
According to recent statistics provided by IDOT, the economic cost to society regarding speed related crashes is estimated to be $40.4 billion per year.
