Sweeney To Take Top Spot For Republicans

Elk Grove Township Clerk and State Senate candidate in the 33rd District Mike Sweeney has been named the new committeeman of the Republican Organization of Elk Grove Township.

Lee Roupas, chairman of the Cook County Republican Organization, appointed Sweeney last week after Mt. Prospect native Cheryl Axley resigned from the position prior.

Sweeney took over as committeeman effective Thursday, Apr. 10. The position will be contested once again during the 2010 primary elections.

"I am very excited about moving the local Republican organization forward and assisting the Cook County and the state Republican organizations in electing the best candidates possible as well as continuing to fight for hard working men, women and families," said Sweeney.

Sweeney said he sought out the position because the township has "great present captains and great people involved."

"There is a lot of potential that is not being lived up to," he added. "I have great ideas, energy and passion and will work hard."

He stated the township is strong and it's moving in the right direction.

His first order of business he said will be to get in touch with the present captains and let everyone know he is the new committeeman. He plans to schedule a meeting with the captains and other individuals involved in the organization within the next several weeks, he said.

Sweeney will challenge incumbent Sen. Dan Kotowski of Park Ridge in November's General Election.

Elk Grove Township serves about 66% of Elk Grove Village; 55% of Mt. Prospect; 20% of Des Plaines; 15% of Arlington Heights and 10% of Rolling Meadows. About one-fourth of the geographic area of the Township is unincorporated, a large portion of which is Forest Preserve.
