Prospect Collecting For NIU Victims At Upcoming Concerts
A free will offering will be collected to support the Northern Illinois University (NIU) Feb. 14 Student Scholarship Fund during Prospect High School's Chamber and Varsity choir concert performance on Sunday, Apr. 6 at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights.
For the past two years, Prospect High School choirs have participated in NIU's Choir Day in the fall.
This event has given Prospect High School students a chance to work directly with university faculty and NIU students, bringing the tragedy of the Feb. 14 events closer to home for Prospect students.
"This is our chance to give back to the university," said choir director Ken Whitney. "With our gifts of finances and music, I hope we'll be able to bring light to a dark situation."
Whitney has been in contact with Dr. Eric Johnson, director of choirs at NIU, who "hopes" to send some of his NIU students to this concert to sing with the Prospect choirs. NIU established a scholarship fund to honor the memory of the students killed in the Feb. 14 campus tragedy.
The fund, known as the Feb. 14 Students Scholarship Fund, will receive gifts through the NIU Foundation for the general scholarship fund, and work though the NIU Scholarship Committee to distribute the scholarships to deserving students in the name of those who lost their lives in the shootings.
