Benefits & Fundraisers
Join Adopt-A-Pet for a day of fun for your kids and pets, and to raise awareness and funds for the animal rescue shelter, on Saturday, Mar. 22, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Goin' Postal, 124 W. Northwest Hwy., Palatine. For a nominal donation to the homeless pets, go home with a cute photo of your pets, your children or your family with the Easter Bunny. Adopt-A-Pet, a not-for-profit organization, rescues homeless, abandoned, abused and neglected dogs and cats from the local community and finds loving homes for them.
As one of the leading fundraising event for Journeys, the Journeys "Vegas Night" is a fun and memorable affair. Guests can enjoy delicious hors d'oeuvres, a 3-hour open bar and a variety of "Vegas style" games (poker, black, jack, roulette, craps and the big money wheel) on Friday, Apr. 4, at Atlantis Banquets, 1273 N. Rand Rd., Arlington Hts. The fun lasts from 6-11 p.m. Journeys from PADS to HOPE helps individuals in Northwest Suburban Cook County who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
Queen of the Rosary School, Elk Grove Village, is hosting its spring fundraiser, "French Quarter Dinner Dance," on Friday, Apr. 4 at 6 p.m. at The Belvedere, 1170 Devon Avenue, in Elk Grove. Clubs & Organizations
The March meeting of the Northwest Suburban Astronomers will feature a presentation by NASA JPL Solar System Ambassador Jim Kovac, "Mars Missions and Mysteries." In this presentation, follow the journey of the Mars Exploration Rovers, compare Earth with this neighboring world, view its massive geological features, and discuss some recent discoveries and intriguing mysteries of the "Red Planet." The club gathers on Friday, Mar. 21 beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Hoffman Estates Park District Community Center, 1685 West Higgins Rd., (at Huntington), Hoffman Estates. There is no cost to attend. Arlington Camera Club meets at 7:30 p.m. on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month, September-June. Meetings are held at the Arlington Historical Society, 110 W. Fremont, Arlington Heights (just west of the library). The Apr. 2 meeting will be a competition, followed by a critique workshop on Apr. 16.
Eli Skinner Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, will hold its annual chapter meeting on Thursday, Apr. 3 at 12:30 p.m. at the Palatine Public Library, 700 N. North Court, Palatine. The meeting will include election of officers, as well as committee displays and reports. Eli Skinner Chapter, NSDAR, is a service organization that meets monthly from September through June. Its objectives are historical, educational and patriotic. Membership is open to any woman 18 years or older who can trace her family to an ancestor who served the cause of the American Revolution. Membership information is available at ArlHtsDAR@aol.com.
On Saturday, Apr. 5, from 8:30 a.m.-Noon, Long Grove Fire Protection District firefighters will host a pancake breakfast celebrating the launch of the new South Lake County Regional Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) as a community resource in case of major emergencies. The firehouse is located at 1165 Old McHenry Road, Long Grove. CERT program volunteers ages 18 and up are trained on how to handle disasters, hazards and situations that may impact their home, neighborhood and/or business. The pancake breakfast - co-sponsored by area businesses - will include live acoustical music by Thomas Swenson, a silent auction (one prize being an escorted ride in the Long Grove fire engine), a 50/50 raffle and a kids' safety puppet show. Face painting, balloon art, tattoos and more are also planned. The breakfast is co-presented by the Long Grove Fire Fighters Association to help area firefighters and their families during financial crisis due to death or serious illness. The St. Columbkille Alumnae Association will sponsor its annual reunion luncheon on Sunday, Apr. 6 at the Fountain Blue, 2300 S. Mannheim Rd., Des Plaines. Cocktails will begin at noon and lunch will be served at 1 p.m. There is a fee. Proceeds go towards the retirement fund of the Sisters of Providence, St. Mary of the Woods, Indiana.

Township High School Dist. 214 Community Education presents its next Travel & Adventure program on the "Aloha State" on Tuesday, Apr. 8. at 3 p.m. Heading up the presentation is John Wilson, an award-winning Canadian wildlife cinematographer, who has been filming for television since 1974. His shows have appeared on the CBC, PBS and Discovery Channel. Tickets may be purchased at the door on the day of the performance or in advance from the Community Education Office at 2121 S. "Les Bavards du Nord", a monthly francophone lunch group, will meet again on Saturday, Apr. 19, at 1 p.m., for lunch and conversation in French at a Buffalo Grove-area restaurant to be announced later via email. Holy Week Worship Schedule for Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 1234 N. Arlington Heights Rd., Arlington Heights: On Mar. 20, Maundy Thursday, there will be a 12 noon Table Fellowship communion and at 7:30 p.m., Holy Communion worship with the adult choir. Crosswalks will take place on Good Friday, Mar. 21 at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. At 12:00 noon and 7:30 p.m., "The Seven Last Words of Christ" will take place with a service of music and scripture featuring the Chicago Sinfonietta string quartet. There will be a 5 p.m. Service of Lessons and Holy Communion on Holy Saturday, Mar. 22. Prayer vigils will start on Saturday, Mar. 22, 7 a.m. through Sunday, Mar. 23, 7 a.m. To celebrate Easter Sunday, on Mar. 23, traditional worship will take place at 7:30, 9 and 10:30 a.m. Contemporary worship will be at 9 and 10:30 p.m.
Elk Grove Baptist Church, 801 Beisner Road, Elk Grove Village, invites area seniors to its Senior Luncheons, held the 3rd Friday of every other month at 11:30 a.m. Bring a dish to share if you like, and meet new friends while you enjoy good conversation and fellowship. Northwest Assembly of God Church is hosting its 6th annual Easter Eggstravaganza on Saturday, Mar. 22. Festivities will feature 25,000 eggs filled with candy and other fun activities. There will be a petting zoo, inflatables, face painting, free food and free pictures with the Easter Bunny. Northwest Assembly is located at the corner of Wolf and Kensington roads in Mt. Prospect.
