Man Killed Crossing I-90 Identified

State Police released the name of a man killed last week while crossing I-90 on foot just west of Arlington Heights Road.

James Schwertfeger, 43, of Roselle, was struck by a 1988 Toyota driven by Arniez Okwuosa of 6011 N. Winthrop St. in Chicago while crossing the eastbound lanes of the highway on foot, according to police.

The accident occurred late Tuesday, Mar. 4.

Police in the incident did not cite Okwuosa.

Illinois State Police Sgt. Luis Gutierrez confirmed that a van found to be inoperable off the westbound lanes belonged to Schwertfeger.

Gutierrez said police do not know if Schwertfeger was crossing the highway to find help with his van. He said Schwertfeger had no family in the Chicago area but family in Colorado was notified.

Gutierrez said toxicology reports are not back from the medical examiner and the incident is still under investigation.
