David Schuler is the new Twp. High School Dist. 214 superintendent, thanks to his past teachers.

"I had a wonderful kindergarten teacher, which set the stage for me to become an educator," he said. "Having a wonderful group of teachers really compelled me to this profession."

Born and raised in Wisconsin, Schuler always knew that he was going to become an educator. His mother is a retired teacher who he said was also a strong influence.

Schuler received his undergraduate degree in history at Carroll College in Waukesha, Wisc. and his masters and doctoral degrees in education administration at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He taught in Waukesha as a high school social studies and was an activities and athletic director at a school in south side of Milwaukee. Later, Schuler became a principal at a school in Marshall, Wisc. He was at that position for a year before becoming that school district's superintendent. Two years later, Schuler moved to Stevens Point, Wisc. and was school superintendent there for three years.

Her said he was not looking to leave his superintendent position in Stevens Point. Besides the job, Schuler's family was close by. His parents live in central Wisconsin and his sister lives in the Milwaukee area.

Yet, when a former colleague convinced him to apply for the Dist. 214 position, Schuler felt that he couldn't pass up the opportunity.

"Every school district is unique," he said. "Dist. 214 is a perfect fit. I didn't know how great the place really is."

Schuler has been in town for a month and is "impressed" with the district and its community. He has settled into his residence in downtown Mt. Prospect and has had the chance to attend various community events.

"One of things I'm impressed with the community is how nice and courteous people have been," he said. "When I'm jogging, people would say hello."

He said he is ready to settle down at his new position for an extended period of tine. As superintendent, Schuler plans to spend time gaining an understanding of the district's schools and organizations.

"It's critical of understand what this school system is about," Schuler said. "I want to identify its strengths and improvements and concentrate on providing more quality learning opportunities for students."

Schuler also plans to focus on staff development and let research and data guide the district's course of action.

"Dist. 214 has a high regard for educational achievement that the communities comprising it should be really proud of," he said.
