The review came in response to concerns expressed by the Police Department, Park District, Palatine High School students and parents.
According to a city report, the police department was concerned about over-parking adjacent to Celtic Park, leading to illegal parking, obstruction of Park District vehicles and an increase in service calls. Police calls to the area have increased to respond to burglaries, accidents, loud music and driving complaints.
The village council decided Monday to pay $600 for six parking signs adjacent to Celtic Park that will prohibit parking on N. Rohlwing Road adjacent to Celtic Park from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. whenever school is in session. The total number of on-street spaces that will be lost is 76 spaces. The lots at Palatine High School have 730 spaces available, and 630 permits were issued last year.
The village council also decided to pay $600 for six signs to stand on N. Rohlwing Road 270 ft. south of Mill Valley to 120 ft. north of Lenox. Police have observed safety concerns for students exiting and entering their vehicles there, because the driver and passengers must avoid traffic on Rohlwing. Police said students crossing Rohlwing have been observed stepping out from behind parked vehicles, resulting in limited visibility for passing motorists. The restriction in parking at that location during school hours will mean the loss of 26 spaces.
