Council To Buy $51,000 Bullet Trap For Police Firing Range

The Palatine Village Council agreed on Monday to purchase a bullet trap system for no more than $51,000.

The existing trap was relocated from the downtown Police Department when the Wood Street Police Station opened. It is estimated to be more than 30 years old, and not cost effective to repair.

A village report states that during the last filter and lead removal process in the pistol range, police noted that the baffles designed to slow down the bullets and redirect their direction were worn and warped, preventing their removal for maintenance.

Village staff's original concept was to replace the existing pistol range trap with a venetian type blind bullet trap, but police found that a Reclining GranTrap better meets the needs of the department.

The Reclining GranTrap enables officers to discharge their .223 rifles, which they cannot do now and could not do with the venetian system. The GranTrap system also reduces airborne lead particles to reduce air handler maintenance, and breaks down for easy transport.

According to a village report, removal of the old system and decontamination procedures will cost $5,395, and the cost for delivery and installation of the Reclining GranTrap system made by Caswell-Meggitt Defense System will cost $51,000.

The village recommended that bidding requirements, which would have the village seek requests to find the lowest bidder, should be waived because Caswell-Meggitt Defense System of Cary, Ill. is the only manufacturer of the equipment preferred by police.

Funds in the amount of $42,000 were appropriated to replace the pistol range, and an additional $19,000 will be transferred into the account to cover the cost.
