It rapidly is becoming known as someone else - a restaurant row.
The seventh eatery on the roadway between Golf Road and Mt. Prospect will open up later this year or early next, as Algonquin is taking on an identity as the village's second most prominent dining-out site, outside of the downtown central business district.
The newest establishment is Applebee's, which proposes to build one of its popular bar and grill eateries on the south side of Algonquin about 1/2 block east of Arlington Hts. Road, immediately east of LaSalle Bank. This site was slated for a AmeriHost Hotel three years ago, but nothing came of that idea.
In this same block are Yanni's Greek Restaurant, Nikko's, and Boston Blackie's. On the other side of Arlington Hts. Road are Higgley's and Denny's, and a long block to the west, at Algonquin and Golf, is Pappadeux seafood.
Applebee's, a casual dining establishment offering a large menu of dinner and sandwich specialties, received permission to rezone the 1.3-acre site and got a special use permit to allow its building. More than a dozen other Applebee locations are well known for being located in the out-lots of shopping malls or along heavily traveled roadways in suburbs throughout the Chicago area.
The restaurant will share parking spaces with an office building located nearby. Hours of operation at the eatery will be 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
