Notre Dame, St. Viator Can't Stay With ESCC Leaders
Notre Dame fell victim to its daunting schedule last weekend in boys basketball. St. Viator had a bad game, but recovered the next day for a weekend split.
The Dons and Lions remain in the East Suburban Catholic Conference's (ESCC) first division with winning records, but with little chance of overtaking leaders St. Joseph and Benet. The Dons are 5-2 in the conference, and the Lions 4-3. St. Joe and Benet are both 8-0.
St. Joseph again proved too much for the Dons to handle in a 74-61 Chargers victory last Friday. Quinton Chievous led the Dons with 24 points, and Shawn Wallace added 22. Wallace popped in a basket to bring the Dons within 43-38 in the third quarter, but the Chargers then went on a 9-2 run to take a comfortable lead. The Dons again closed to 65-59 on Chievous three-point play. But the Dons could get no closer. The next night, the Dons played well but dropped a 62-59 decision to Chicago Lincoln Park in the Whitney Young Shootout. This dropped the Don season record to 13-8.
St. Viator, on the other hand, had a Jekyll and Hyde weekend.
At Benet on Friday, the Lions played possibly the worst game of their season in a 58-39 loss to Benet, co-leader in the ESCC. The Redwings jumped out to a 21-4 lead in the first half and never looked back. Alan Aboona led the Lions with 10 points. It was the Lions lowest point total of the season and 21 points below their per-game average.
The next night, however, the Lions bounced back with a 42-35 win over Nazareth in LaGrange Park. Brendan King scored 12 points, Aboona also had 12, and Chris Myjak returned after being out 3 games because of illness to score 4 points. 'Viator is 16-5 overall in addition to its 4-3 record in the ESCC.
