Notre Dame Duo Picks Up 3rd, 14th At State Finals
By DWIGHT ESAU Journal Sports
Notre Dame High School in Niles did not have a team at the state boys bowling championships last weekend. But two Don bowlers stood tall with top-15 finishes in the competition.
Junior Justin Sanetra and senior Tony Olbeira, bowling as individuals, finished in third and 14th place, respectively, at St. Clair Bowl in O'Fallon last Saturday in the IHSA state finals. About 120 bowlers participated in the state finals.
Both qualified for state by finishing 1-2 and knocking down 1,340 and 1,302 pins, respectively, at the Vernon Hills sectional the previous weekend.
Sanetra rolled series of 718 and 682 for a 1,400 score on day one at O'Fallon last Friday. He was fourth after that day. He had games of 268-202-248-226-243-213.
On the final day Saturday, he rolled series of 694 and 632 for a grand total score of 2,726 and third place. He averaged 227.2 for the two-day tournament.
Sanetra started Saturday with a 159 game, but bounced back nicely with games of 257 and 278. Olbeira started Friday with a 1,236 score on series of 603 and 633. This was good enough for 43rd place and advancement to the next day's final round. On Saturday, he soared to 14th place on series of 731 and 623 for a grand total score of 2,590. He averaged 215.8 for the tournament.
Sanetra, who returns next year, and Olbeira were main cogs in a Don team that won the Chicago Catholic League championship this year and won almost all of its dual matches. This is the third consecutive year the Dons have advanced individuals to the state finals. In the previous two years, Billy Kerber and Brett Dahm were state qualifiers.
The Don team was coached this year by Dominic Catalano.
