Prospect's 3rd Leads Locals At Wheeling Invite; St. Viator 5th

By BOBBY CHILVER Journal Sports

Prospect boys golf finished an impressive third and St. Viator, Notre Dame, Hersey and Wheeling earned top ten finishes as part of a solid local showing at the ultra-competitive 22-team Wheeling Invite Saturday.

Played at Chevy Chase Country Club, the Wheeling event typically draws some of the best teams in the Chicagoland area.

Lake Forest took this year's crown with a 296, followed by St. Charles East's second place 299.

Prospect carded a 304 for third place, edging out state powers Barrington in fourth (306) and St. Viator in fifth (307).

Jimi Poulos led the Knights with a well-played round of 70, good enough for the third place individual medal.

Teammate Matt Maloney, Mike Sokilik and Cael Kiess carded 78s to round out the team's scoring.

St. Viator's fifth place finish was paced by Kenny Wienckowski's 70, tying him with Poulos for third best on the day. Brad Klune followed with a 76, Joe Carlson a 78 and both Luke DeTrempe and Joe Ferrari shot 83s.

Notre Dame fired a 312 for sixth place while Hersey (314, 8th place) and host Wheeling (323, 10th) also cracked the top ten.

Huskie Kevin Snodgrass shot a 75 to tie him for 9th best at the invite while Ryan Starkman was a shot behind at 76.

Wheeling's top performers were Jack Ferguson and Michael Taylor, who each carded an 80.

Other local teams participating included Maine South (326, 11th), Buffalo Grove (331, 13th), Elk Grove (345, 15th), Rolling Meadows (351, 17th), Niles West (366, 20th) and Leyden (410, 22nd).

In other golf action last weekend:

* Fremd shot a 302 to take first place at the Dundee-Crown Charger Classic on Saturday, played at Randall Oaks in West Dundee.

The Vikings got great performances from Brad Berulter, who was fourth individually with a 72, and Chris Ramirez, 8th with a 74. Also scoring were Brad Peterson (77) and Max Stejskal (79).

* Prospect also continued their perfect play in the Mid-Suburban League by topping Wheeling 157-165 with Matt Maloney carding a 37.

* Hersey outshot Schaumburg 166-187, led by Kevin Brawley's 40 at Old Orchard Country Club.

* Leyden shot a 167 to best Morton's 188. Mike Rose led the Eagles with a 39.

* Notre Dame beat Marian Catholic 163-174 behind Zac Chase's 38.

* St. Viator edged Marist 171-174 with Rick Gattone leading the Lions with a 39.

* Last Wednesday, Hoffman Estates (163) topped Conant (170) and Elk Grove (183). Brent Gate led the Cougars with a 40 and Adam Dill shot a 42 to lead Elk Grove.
