Jim Christ Tourney Returns July 10-12

By BOBBY CHILVER Journal Sports

Hundreds of youth baseball players will converge on Glenview next weekend, July 10-12, as part of the 7th Annual Jim Christ Memorial Tournament.

The event was started to honor the late Jim Christ, a longtime coach of the Glenview Youth Baseball League. Now the tournament has grown into one of the largest of its kind, drawing teams from as far away as Bloomington and southern Wisconsin.

Organizer Tim Heublein said there are at least 56 teams participating in this year's event, each placed into divisions based on age. There are champions named in each age group, from 9 to 13. Games will be played Westbrook, Crowley, Apollo, Johns and Flick parks. The tournament kicks off Thursday and runs through Sunday, when semi-final and championship games are played.

Glenview should be well-represented in the tournament as well, as its youth league has four teams in the 9-year-old division, three in the 10, two in 11, two in 12 and 1 in 13.

The Jim Christ tournament also benefits of good cause.  Proceeds from the event go to the Needy Family Fund, which offers help to those in financial need. The charity is run by Sister Paulanne at Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish in Glenview.

There is even a BBQ dinner Saturday night at the church that runs in conjunction with the tournament. The dinner begins at 5 p.m. and includes a silent auction and games.

Combined with the tournament, the events have raised over $250,000 for the Needy Family Fund, according to Heublein.
