Maine East, Wheeling Survive 'Play-In' Games
Both Maine East and Wheeling girls soccer lived to play another day on Friday, knocking off their respective opponents in regional play-in games.
Maine East knocked off Elgin in with a late goal and some clutch penalty kicks. After trailing most of the game, the Demons tied the game at one with just under three minutes to play in the second half.
They then edged Elgin in penalty kicks 4-3, advancing to the regional semi-finals.
Wheeling beat Prairie Ridge 1-0 with a goal from Nallely Arreola, assisted by Emily Kahan.
Unfortunately, both teams will now be taking on their sectional's No. 1 seeds. Maine East advanced to take on Maine South while Wheeling will play Fremd.
That Wheeling-Fremd game was scheduled for yesterday (Tuesday).
The rest of the girls soccer teams begin their post-season today (Wednesday) as regional semi-finals kick off, followed by championships on Friday and Saturday. Here's a look at those first round match-ups today.
