Prospect Leads Way At Palatine
A total of 21 athletes in individual events and five relay teams, representing seven Journal-area schools, qualified for the state finals in girls track at the Palatine sectional last weekend.
Four area schools placed in the top eight on team points among about 20 teams. Prospect was 3rd with 62 points, Wheeling was 6th with 29 points, Glenbrook South was 7th with 28.5 points, and Hersey was eighth with 28 points.
Here is a team-by-team rundown of state qualifiers:
Prospect - The Knights were third in all four relays, beating state standards each time. In individual events, Emily Gruendel was third in the shot put with a toss of 39 feet, Annette White was second in the two-mile run in a time of 11:06.9, 23 seconds behind winner Amber Stack of Wheeling; Lucy Taylor made it through with a second in the 800 meters (2:16.9), and a sixth in the mile ((5:17.5), Emily Salzman was third in the 800 in 2:18.4, and Claire Hollis was 7th in the mile in 5:17.7.
Wheeling - Stack won both the mile and two-mile events easily with times of 10:43.9 in the 3200 and 5:06.3 in the mile. Ashley Wilson took 4th in the shot put with a heave of 38.1 feet, and Rachel Stinebring snuck into the two-mile field with a 9th place in 11:29.6.
Hersey - The Huskies got one relay team through (the 3200 in 9:42.5), and Paige Scott had a triple jump of 35-9 to make it, Megan Gojney ran the 3200 in 11:11.7 to qualify, and Tia Roberson ran the 100 meters in 12.5 to get to state.
Glenbrook South - The Titans had two sectional winners -Ellen Chapman took the high jump with a leap of 5-6, and Andrea Crump won the triple jump with 37-6.
St. Viator - Kelly Hendrichs had an outstanding day for the Lions, winning the 100 meters with a time of 12.3 seconds, and taking second in the 200 meters in 25. 8 seconds.
Rolling Meadows - The Mustangs qualified individuals in three events. Mandy Streau was second in the shot put with a toss of 40-2, Christina Gastfield was seventh in the two-mile run in 11:25.5, and Amanda Whowell ran second to Stack in the mile run in 5:11.5.
Niles West - The lone qualifier for the Wolves was Megumi Hoshi, who finished 5th in the 800 meters in a time of 2:20.5.
Palatine won this sectional with Evanston second.
At the St. Charles North sectional, Conant was a strong second to winner Barrington. As expected, the Cougars did well in the sprints, sprint relays, and field events.
Toni Graham won the 100 and 200-meter events in 11.9 and 24.8, respectively. Brianna Millar was second to Graham in the 100 in 12.3
The Cougars got their 400 and mile relay teams to state, but missed in the 800 and two-mile relays. In addition, Josie Hutch made it in the high hurdles in 15.7 seconds (2nd lace), Kalli Dalton qualified in the 800 meters with a seventh-place time of 2:19.7, Sarah Gorden placed second in the low hurdles in 46.3 seconds, and Destiny Arps was second to Graham in the 200 meters in 25.3 seconds.
