Hawks Hopeful Heading Into Post-Season

Maine South soccer may be stuck in third place of the Central Suburban League-South, but they are playing good soccer and coach J.J. Crawford believes they can do some damage in the upcoming state playoffs.

The Lady Hawks improved to 13-2-4 last weekend with a 3-1 win over Elk Grove. Jenna Shemky, Shannon O'Hern and Kelly Kohlndorfer all scored in the win, which was a nice bounce back game after two tough conference decisions.

Last week the Hawks lost to Evanston and tied New Trier, which means they will finish behind the two in CSL-South standings. But the post-season is fast approaching and Crawford is confident this team can make a run, a statement the seeding committee obviously agreed with.

The Hawks are the No. 1 seed in the Streamwood sectional and will get the winner of Maine East-Elgin in the first round next Wednesday, May 14. They could then see a re-match with Elk Grove for the regional title as the Grens take on Streamwood in their semi-final.

"I think we can still go far in the playoffs," Crawford said. "Hopefully we can get a couple wins, get into sectionals and see what happens."

Another top team in the area is Hersey, who clinched the MSL-East title Monday with a 2-0 win over Rolling Meadows.

Jackie Drees scored on a Kristen Gierman corner kick and Amanda Slove added an insurance goal as the Huskies moved on to the MSL title game against Fremd.

The MSL Cup game will be played at 7 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday) at Fremd.

On Friday, Hersey knocked off Barrington 2-0 with goals from Kathryn Korff and Amanda Slove.

The Huskies are the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Palatine sectional and will play No. 14 Wauconda in their first game next Wednesday at Lake Zurich.

In another local regional match up, No 8 St. Viator plays No. 9 Prospect in a first-round contest of two very talented clubs. That game will also be played next Wednesday, at St. Viator.

Prospect beat Buffalo Grove 2-1 Monday on goals by Susie Lello and Danielle Brucci.

St. Viator exploded for six goals in the second half to blow out Providence, 7-0. Jackie Tumberger scored the last three goals for a hat trick and Susan Szymczak scored two of her own. Other scorers were Andre Davito and Taylor Skala.

Over the weekend, Palatine topped St. Viator 2-1 on the way to winning their own tournament.
