Penguins March Into First Place
Competition has begun in Des Plaines Girls Softball.
In the Senior (14-Under) Division, the Penguins and Drive Performance teams recorded big wins in the first week of games.
The Penguins braved a cold, rainy day and held on for a 16-15 win over Waycinden's Typhoon. Stephany Meza smashed a triple and scored 3 runs for the winners. Shannon scored twice and was the winning pitcher. Jade struck out 7 hitters in four solid innings. Kalei stole 3 bases. Kayla drove in 3 runs and Nikki L. played solid defense and her assist from the outfield helped cut down a run at the plate. Other big hitters for the Penguins were Sam, Nikki V., Abbi, and Zoe.
Drive Performance out-slugged Dr. Barry's Mighty Molars, 23-11, with a team batting average of .457, 22 total bases, and 23 runs scored in 6 innings. Georgia Petersen pitched the first 3 innings, striking out 5 and giving up 3 runs. She went 3-for-4 at the plate with 2 walks and an RBI. Mackenzie Morris walloped 3 doubles and drove in 3 runs. Rebecca Reich, sore elbow and all, reached first base all 5 times at bat. Jenny Burke tripled, went 3-for-4 at the plate, and drove in 5 runs. Anna Greco slammed a 2-run double. Kara Atwood contributed aggressive base stealing and had 3 RBIs.
