Fremd Stops Maine West
Maine West finally lost a softball game, but had another good week, Leyden fell victim to Elk Grove's power, and Niles West split with Conant.
These are the softball highlights this week as the regular season entered its final two weeks.
West started last week with a 7-0 win over Glenbrook North in the Central Suburban League. Emily Ott tossed a 1-hitter on the mound with 12 strikeouts and 3 walks to improve the West record in the conference to 8-0. Nicole Eisenberg, Katie Lowe, and Ott led the West offense.
Then the Warriors went to the Rolling Meadows tournament where in game one, they defeated Glenbrook, South, 7-2, again behind Ott's 4-hitter. She struck out 15, including the final 8 batters she faced. Caryn McGinley and Kaliegh McGing led the Warrior offense.
In the tournament's championship game, Fremd snapped West's 20-game win streak, 3-1. Ott fanned 8 and gave up 5 hits. A fielder's choice and a double in the first inning gave Fremd all the runs it would need.
West ended the week at 20-3 on the season.
Niles West split a pair with Conant in another non-conference pair. Julie Schwenk was the winning pitcher for the Wolves in the opener, while Joanna Lefevre doubled.
Leyden bowed twice to Elk Grove, 13-0 and 14-6, but improved to 9-12, and 4-4 in the West Suburban Gold, with a 6-3 win over Addison Trail. Nicole Spisak and Dana Thomas each had 2 hits to pace the Eagle attack, and Lauren Sullivan also contributed to this win.
St. Viator, steadily improving as its hitting steps up, got a 6-RBI day from Danielle Sipiora (pair of 3-run homers, 4 hits) in a 12-3 long-ball romp over Benet in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. Lauren Banaszak also homered and drove in 3 runs and Melanie Slawny added a home run.
On the mound, Emily Catanese and Julie Sweeney combined to pitch a 6-hitter.
Maine East was shut out by Hersey, 8-0, as the Huskies Kristy Johnson fired a 1-hitter at the Demons.
