Prospect Still In The Hunt

Prospect avenged its earlier loss to Elk Grove Monday with a 3-0 shutout to pull back into the conference race.

The Knights scored all three runs in the top of the fifth as starter Sheri Weidner escaped some jams to shutout the Mid-Suburban League East leading Grens.

Prospect now stands at 8-4 in the East, a game and a half behind Elk Grove at 10-3.

Singles by Paige O'Neil and Sheri Weidner set the table for the Knights' big inning. Pinch runner Katie Dillon scored on a fielder's choice and Amy Varner provided the big blow with a 2-run triple.

That was all Prospect would need as the Grens got their hits, but Weidner consistently shut the door on scoring opportunities. She struck out four and walked one in the win.

On Saturday, Elk Grove cruised to a double-header sweep of Leyden.

Stephanie Dolce was 3-for-4 with a home run and 3 RBI, while Nikki Goranson and Amanda Mertes were each 2-fo-2 to lead the Grens in game one, a 13-0 win.

Kayla Mahoney then knocked in three and hit a home run while Amy Charewicz and Krystine Leazer nailed multiple hits in a game two win.

Nicole Spisak was 2-for-4 with a double for Leyden.

Buffalo Grove blew out Rolling Meadows 11-0 behind a 3-hitter from starter Maria Dax and homeruns by Katie Lee and Andrea DiPrima.

Conant fell to Hoffman Estates 6-4 despite two doubles from Paige Ward. Conant also split a doubleheader with Niles West Saturday. Kailee Prasbrig earned the game two win while Tricia Kutramanes, Paige Ward, Nicole Gross and Vicki McGuire all had two hit games.

Wheeling topped Hersey 2-1 Monday as freshman Alyson Fallon drove home the winning run in top of the seventh. Carly Speidel stuck out ten and earned the win.

Hersey scored their run on an RBI single by Alyssa Kieffer, driving in Jessie Harris.
