Let The Games Resume

After the first two days of the girls Class AA state basketball regionals, it was Mother Nature over the sport by a wide margin.

After a couple of play-in games among lower-seeded teams on Monday (Feb. 12), the season's worst storm forced postponement of all second-round games on Tuesday.

Semifinal rounds at six regionals involving Journal-area teams were played on Wednesday, Feb. 14, with finals played on either Thursday (yesterday) or today.

Regional finals will be played at 7:30 p.m. today (Friday) at Maine South and Deerfield. The other regional finals were played yesterday.

In a play-in game at Maine South last Monday, Leyden eliminated Elgin, 49-44, in overtime to earn the right to meet top-seeded Maine South.

Trailing 31-17 in the third quarter, the Eagles (7-22) rallied to tie the game at 38 in regulation, then dominated the overtime. Lizette Escarpita led Leyden with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Erica Green added 13 points, 9 boards, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. Emily Hillertz contributed 7 points and 3 steals.

The Eagles strongly out-rebounded the taller Maroons, which Maroon coach Angie Hudson reportedly said made the difference in the game.

In the St. Charles North regional, Maine East eliminated Ridgewood to advance and play third-seeded Maine West.
