A Look At Who's On The Ballot
By TIM O'CONNOR Journal & Topics Reporter
Rosemont residents who vote in next Tuesday's primary election will see a long list of political contests on the ballot. Some of those races feature well-known names while others have lesser-know candidates.
The following is a list of important and interesting races Leyden Township residents will vote on.
The Republican primary has two contested races for Cook County commissioner. The 16th Dist. features incumbent Tony Peraica against Brian Sloan, a public accountant who was elected to the Westchester Village Board last year.
In the 17th Dist. incumbent Liz Gorman is running against Maine Township Republican Committeeman Mark Thompson of Des Plaines. The race is heated as both candidates have called for each other to drop out of the race on charges of questionable dealings or associations.
Also on the Republican ticket is Bradley Stephens. The Rosemont mayor is running for Leyden Township Republican committeeman for the first time. He took over the office when his late father, Donald Stephens, died three years ago.
Two Democrats are running for Leyden Township Democratic committeeman: incumbent Barrett Pedersen, an estate planning attorney and Franklin Park mayor, and Frank L. McPartlin, an Elmwood Park resident who ran unsuccessfully for Democratic committeeman eight years ago.
On the Democratic side, Cary Capparelli is running unopposed for County Commissioner 9th Dist. The son of Raplh Capparelli, a longtime member of Illinois' House of Representatives, will face off against Republican Peter Silvestri in the November election.
Jan Schakowsky is also running unopposed for reelection as U.S. Rep. for the 9th Dist. She is one of the Democratic leaders in the House and serves as the Chief Deputy Whip.
Running for governor on the Democratic ballot are current governor Pat Quinn and Daniel Hynes.
The Democratic Senate primary is between Robert Marshall, David Hoffman, Jacob Meister, Alexi Giannoulias, and Cheryle Jackson.
Running for president of the County Board are Democrats Toni Preckwinkle, Terrence O'Brien, Dorothy Brown, and incumbent Todd Stroger.
Republican candidates for governor are Kirk Dillard, Bill Brady, Bob Schillerstrom, Adam Andrzejewski, Dan Proft, Jim Ryan, and Andy McKenna.
Republican Senate candidates are Don Lowery, Mark Kirk, Andy Martin, Kathleen Thomas, John Arrington, and Patrick Hughes.
The two Republican candidates for president of the County Board are Roger Keats and John Garrido III.
