Home Improvement Grants Distributed

A total of 415 Rosemont homeowners have each been issued around $2,000 in grant money as part of the village's annual program to promote home improvements.

Rosemont residents who live in homes they own are eligible to participate in the yearly village program. Village board members recently approved an ordinance establishing the grant program and application period.

The program awards eligible property owners grants based on real estate taxes that are paid to various local units of government.

Grants are subject to a cap based on the equalized assessed valuation of property. Residents who are eligible must live in homes that they own and reside in. Applicants must present proof that they have paid their property taxes.

"The purpose of the grant is for people to maintain their property and to maintain Rosemont as an attractive place to live," explained Village Attorney Peter Rosenthal last fall. He added that the village does not monitor how the money is spent.

This year, the maximum grant awarded was $2,908 while last year, the maximum amount was $2,860.80 and in 2007, the average sum was $2,131.
