Rosemont's 4th Red Light Camera At Mannheim, Higgins

Rosemont's next red light camera system, similar to the one currently in place at River and Higgins roads (above), will be installed about a mile away at Mannheim and Higgins.

Rosemont's fourth red light camera intersection, where motorists traveling through red lights are caught on film and fined, will be activated this Friday, June 26 at Mannheim and Higgins roads.

According to a Rosemont Public Safety Dept. press release, the decision to add Mannheim and Higgins was made because of the intersection's large volume of traffic and substantial number of traffic accidents within the village.

That intersection separates Rosemont from Des Plaines and Chicago's O'Hare Airport. Most of those accidents are caused by the failure of drivers to stop for a red signal, said the statement.

Rosemont's photo enforcement program, which is operated and maintained by RedSpeed Illinois, LLC, has been in operation since August 2007. Red light camera systems are currently deployed at the intersections of River Road and Bryn Mawr Avenue, River and Balmoral and River and Higgins. They have been "very successful in enhancing traffic safety," said the press release.

The Mannheim and Higgins corner will be activated at 12:01 a.m. June 26. Beginning on that date, violators will be recorded and notices will be sent out to registered owners of vehicles that are driven through a red light. Car owners will have the options of paying the $100 fine, contesting the violation at an administrative hearing in Rosemont or contesting it via U.S. mail.

"No Turn On Red" signs are posted at every red light corner in Rosemont.

Many other suburbs have red light programs. Des Plaines City Council members earlier this year agreed to move forward with the city's own program, which may be activated this fall.
