Gas Main Break In Rosemont
A large gas main break on Rosemont's north side evacuated two manufacturing facilities Thurday morning.
Nicor gas crews and dozens of Rosemont police and fire units responded to the break at about 9:30 a.m. today (Thursday, June 5) at 7047 Barry Street, about a half a block from the Rosemont Recreation Center south of Touhy Avenue.
As of 12:51 p.m. today a Nicor Gas company spokesman said gas was off and the area was safe.
Nicor spokesman Richard Caragol told the Journal that crews were working on a water main when the 4" gas main was struck causing the leak.
Caragol said Nicor was notified at 9:50 a.m. and was on the scene by 10:13 a.m.
Police blocked off Barry Street south of Touhy to Lunt Avenue and parts of Lunt Avenue east and west of Barry Street.
The Rosemont Recreation Center, located inside the blocked off area, remained open during repairs.
Caragol said two manufacturing facilities near the break were evacuated.
As of 1:45 p.m., eight customers remained without gas service as Nicor crews remained on the scene making repairs.
Caragol said the eight customers are all businesses and no residential customers were affected.
