Sixth Graders Journey Downstate

A total of 30 sixth grade students from Rosemont Elementary School learned what Abraham Lincoln meant when he said "Four Score and Seven Years Ago," when they traveled down to Springfield for the school's annual trip on Friday, Apr. 18.

Student learned about Illinois' history and contributions to this country over decades and centuries before returning Saturday, Apr. 19.

According to Linda McGill, language arts and reading teacher, students along with some parents and another staff member spent a day visiting New Salem, where Lincoln resided when he was in his 20s.

The students also toured Springfield, Lincoln's home, and the old and new Capital buildings.

Additionally, McGill said the students visited Lincoln's tomb along with Illinois' version of war memorials that date back to the world wars.

The weather wasn't cooperative, so the students did spend some of their time at an indoor arcade, McGill said.

On the way back that Saturday, the students stopped off in Arthur-Arcola and learned about the Amish heritage.

McGill said the students were all given an assignment when they came back to do a timeline of certain historic events through a Power Point presentation. The students will present their project to their teacher before the end of the school year.
