Off To The Capital!

Rosemont 8th Graders Make Annual Class Trip To D.C.

Just like Mr. Smith, Rosemont students go to Washington.

Eighth grade students at Rosemont Elementary School left for Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, Apr. 30 to learn about the country's past, present and future. They returned on Saturday, May 3.

According to Linda McGill, language arts and reading teacher, students, along with nine parents and a couple staff members, spent a half-day visiting Gettysburg, Pa., where they witnessed different parts of the battlefield soldiers fought and died on.

"Students also experienced what it was like to be soldiers during that time," McGill said.

The trip also included a visit the Smithsonian Institute, laying of a wreath at Arlington Cemetery, touring the National Cathedral, Mt. Vernon, the Capital, and much more.

Everyone on the trip had the opportunity to witness the U.S. Senate in session. McGill said elected officials were in the middle of discussing a proposed bill pertaining to airlines.

Students were all given an assignment when they returned h ome to do a report on an event or something they saw that would require a bit of research.

McGill said one student is finding out what the requirements are to be a guard at Arlington Cemetery. She said another student is doing a report on where artifacts go at the Smithsonian Institute when they are not displayed for public viewing.

Additionally, for the first time, each student will receive a DVD from footage that was taken while on the trip.

Students will receive the DVD before the end of the school year, McGill said.
