Empty Bowls Will Be Filled, Benefit Pantry

Food pantries across the Northern suburbs have felt the squeeze of dwindling resources and increased demand. Now, artists from the Leyden High Schools' Art Club are pitching in to help.

For the second year the LHS Art Club will present Empty Bowls, a charity art event the proceeds of which will benefit the Leyden Food Pantry.

The Empty Bowls event will be held at the West Leyden High School cafeteria on Thursday, May 8 from 4 to 7 p.m.

Art students and teachers are creating artful ceramic bowls for the event. For $15, attendees will be able to buy a bowl of soup served in one of those bowls that they will then be able to take home with them.

"They (students) really enjoy the event it self and knowing they are giving back to their own community," said art teacher and club faculty coordinator Caroline Rhodes.

About 15 students primarily from East and West are members of the club participating in the event.

Rhodes said last year's event netted $1,000 that was donated to the pantry.

Empty Bowls is a national program that lends its name as long as the money is donated to help to stop hunger.

Rhodes said the club may consider doing more charitable work as it grows.
