Walkers Raise Money In Fight Against Hunger

Over 250 people from 12 area churches expected to take part in the annual Niles/Park Ridge CROP Hunger Walk last Sunday, Oct. 18 to raise funds to fight global poverty and hunger.

The 10 kilometer charity walk route started and ended at Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church, 8300 Greenwood, Niles.

CROP Walk is much bigger than just Niles and Park Ridge. CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty and similar walks are held in communities throughout the US.

In total, each year, some two million CROP Walkers, volunteers, and sponsors raise over $16 million per year to help end hunger and poverty around the world -- and in their own communities. Founded in 1946, Church World Service is a cooperative ministry of 35 Protestant, Orthodox, and Anglican denominations, providing assistance in some 80 countries.

Maine Township hunger agency and Maine Township Food Pantry, will benefit from the Niles/Park Ridge event. Last year, the CROP Walk donated $7,500 to the Maine Township Food Pantry and is the pantry's largest financial supporter.

Sponsoring  churches in Park Ridge and Niles include: First United Methodist, Mary Seat of Wisdom, Messiah Lutheran, Niles Community Presbyterian, Our Lady of Ransom, Park Ridge Community, Park Ridge Presbyterian, Redeemer Lutheran, St. Andrews Lutheran, St. John Brebeuf Parish, St. Luke's Lutheran, St. Mary's Episcopal.
