City Fares Well Against Storm

Downed branches at Courtland and Stewart in Park Ridge await pick-up Saturday morning following heavy storms the day before.

With 3.6 inches of rain reported on Friday, June 19, Park Ridge again saw isolated flooding.

"I think overall we fared pretty well," said City Engineer Sarah Mitchell. "It could rain up to nine inches and we'd fare better than that," she added, referring to the storm of September 2008 that dumped 9.95 inches on the city. "There were less reported backups and flooding calls than I expected."

Mitchell added the city knew rain was coming and had crews out blocking flooded streets, clearing inlets, and assisting residents. "We had street flooding in areas on Cumberland, south Prospect, and Francis and Grace area," she said.

The rainstorm last Friday made it one of the top 20 wettest days in the history of the city, Mitchell added.

The newly established Flood Control Task Force and the Public Works Department will both give detailed reports of the rain and floods at a special meeting of the city council on Monday, June 29 at 7 p.m.

Mayor Dave Schmidt asked for time at the meeting for public comment and questions regarding flood issues.
