Next Dist. 23 Budget Workshop Feb. 25

By RICHARD MAYER Assistant Managing Editor

Two workshops have been scheduled by Prospect Hts. Elementary School Dist. 23 board members to determine what can be done to cut $1 million in spending from next year's budget.

The first workshop was held yesterday (Tuesday) and the second is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 25 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the administration office.

According to Supt. Dr. Greg Guarrine, the board will review input gathered from five different community groups over the past few months and look at what they believe should be done prior to developing the budget for next school year.

The approximate dozen residents who volunteered their time, ranged from having children currently enrolled in the district to once having children in the district. Those individuals were expected to review all the district's information that affects the budget on an annual basis.

Some of the questions involved the district's salary schedule, programs the district offers and whether they are mandated, why the district did not pursue grade levels when they discussed the issue numerous years ago, and more.

"There is no action taking place during the workshops," said Guarrine.

The purpose of this project is to determine where adjustments can be made to the budget for the 2010-11 school year to help address increasing shortfall between revenue (money received) and expenditures (money spent).

"Hopefully by the March board meeting (Mar. 10), we will know or have some direction to what will be done," said Guarrine.

The district must notify any teacher who will be terminated after this school year 60 days prior to the last school day, which is Friday, June 11.

The district's fiscal year runs from July 1, 2009-June 30, 2010.

Dist. 23 serves students in most of Prospect Hts. and small portions of Wheeling, Arlington Hts., and Mt. Prospect.
