Fire Rips Through Olive St. Home
No one was seriously injured following a fire that damaged a Prospect Hts. home heavily on Monday afternoon.
The fire began at 2:59 p.m. at 1410 E. Olive St. Heavy black smoke and fire were spotted coming from the two-story residence that had been converted into apartments.
Initial reports stated a child was possibly trapped in the home. However, it was later found that all six of the people inside escaped.
Fire companies from Prospect Hts., Wheeling, Mt. Prospect, Arlington Hts., Long Grove, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Palatine, and Buffalo Grove were able to contain the fire within 45 minutes.
Two residents were checked by paramedics at the scene but were not transported to the hospital.
Prospect Hts. Fire District Chief Donald Gould said the home's interior had smoke and fire damage and windows were broken but the structure is savable. He estimated damage at $50,000.
He said all the home's residents were displaced by the blaze. Red Cross assistance and rooms at Candlewood Suites in Wheeling were offered but residents declined.
Gould said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
"We usually don't release that information until it's verified," he said.
