Dist. 23 Approves Free Transporation For Students In 'Safety Hazard' Areas
Prospect Hts. School Dist. 23 board members recently designated certain areas within the district as "Serious Safety Hazards," according to guidelines determined by the Illinois Dept, of Transportation (IDOT) in consultation with the Illinois State Board of Education.
According to Illinois School Code, a school board may provide free transportation for any pupil residing within one and one-half miles from school where conditions are such that walking constitutes a serious hazard due to vehicular traffic. Students who live within those "Serious Safety Hazard" areas are claimable on the State Transportation Reimbursement Claim.
The following areas are considered "Serious Safety Hazards":
* Palatine Frontage Road from Birchwood to Schoenbeck
* Schoenbeck from Stonegate to Palatine
* Palatine Frontage from Elmhurst to Schoenbeck.
* Palatine Frontage from Birchwood to Schoenbeck
* Willow Road at Elmhurst
* Palatine Frontage from Windsor to Schoenbeck
* Schoenbeck Road from South Parkway to Ridge
* Schoenbeck Road crossing Palatine Road
* Schoenbeck Road from Camp McDonald to Willow
* Willow Road from Rand to Schoenbeck
* Elm Street from Willow Road to Kenilworth Avenue
* Rand Road at Camp McDonald Road
* Along Camp McDonald and Schoenbeck
* Along Euclid and Rand from 400-inches west of Rand to the intersection of Rand and Schoenbeck
* Camp McDonald Road from Elmhurst to Schoenbeck
* Along Willow at Elmhurst
* Along Schoenbeck from Olive to 200 ft. north of Camp McDonald Road
* East side of Schoenbeck from Clarendon St. to Camp McDonald Road
* Palatine and Elmhurst roads
* Wheeling Road at Palatine
* Along Wheeling Road from Olive Avenue to Willow Road
* Wheeling Road from Camp McDonald to Willow
* Wheeling Road from Kenilworth Avenue to Willow Road
* Wheeling Road from Olive to Willow Avenue
According to Supt. Dr. Greg Guarrine, the board reviews these routes annually.
Dist. 23 serves students in areas of Prospect Hts., Wheeling, Arlington Hts., and Mt. Prospect.
