Short Police Chase Ends Safely

Prospect Hts. police arrested an Arlington Hts. man during the late evening hours of Thursday, May 28 after he allegedly fled police during a traffic stop.

While on patrol at approximately 10:55 p.m., a Prospect Hts. police officer was traveling northbound on River Road at Milwaukee Avenue when he observed an individual later identified as Joe Edwards, 43, of 2216 Nichols St. in Arlington Hts., allegedly driving southbound in the northbound lanes.

Police said Edwards' vehicle did not have its headlights on and at the last minute swerved back into the southbound lanes nearly hitting the police officer's vehicle.

The officer then turned his vehicle around and attempted to initiate a traffic stop at which time Edwards allegedly began to flee in the vehicle.

A pursuit ensued and the vehicle was eventually boxed in by Prospect Hts. officers at the intersection of Wolf and Central roads in Des Plaines without injury or damage to any vehicles.

According to police, Edwards refused to come out of his vehicle forcing officers to remove him from the car to place him under arrest.

Police said Edwards had bloodshot eyes, smelled of alcohol and had a difficult time walking on his own. Police said they recovered a bottle of rum in his car, which was three-quarters empty.  A check of Edwards' driving record showed that he was currently driving on a revoked driver's license.

Edwards was charged with one count each of aggravated DUI (driving under the influence), fleeing and eluding police, and driving with a revoked driver's license.

Bond was set at $15,000 and he is expected to appear back in a Rolling Meadows courtroom on Tuesday, June 9.
