David Wright
Former Des Plaines firefighter
Former Des Plaines firefighter (Charles) David Wright died in Tucson, Arizona on December 5th, 2009 of respiratory failure.
David had lived in Tucson for the last 20 years.
Born at home in Des Plaines, Illinois, on August 26, 1930 to Anna (nee O'Donnell, of Chicago) and Homer Wright (of Pierpant, Ohio), he was pre-deceased by an older sister, Shirley (Gilbert), and older brother, Russell Moyer. An altar boy at St. Mary's, David was a 1948 graduate of Maine East High School, and a regular attendee of his class reunions, as recently as September 2009. David spent the first 50 years of his life in Des Plaines, first at Webster Avenue with his parents, later on Fargo Avenue with his own family. He also lived briefly in Granada Hills, California; Boca Raton, Florida; and Glenview, Illinois before retiring to Tucson.
In 1948, David joined the Naval Reserve and served for four years. He was stationed at Glenview Naval Airfield, where he played first base for their baseball team. The highlight of his baseball career was playing in 1952 at Wrigley Field. Also while in the service he met and married Sandra Bernstein of Chicago, with whom he then moved to Des Plaines and had three children.
David initially worked for the Des Plaines Post Office, but soon took and passed the civil service exam and became a Des Plaines fireman, stationed principally at the Oakton Street Firehouse for the next 21 years. He was known for his award-winning Firehouse Chili, which he developed while cooking dinner for his co-workers and family. While a firefighter, he also worked part time for Atlas, Mayflower and North American moving companies, working his way up from a mover to a District Manager. He also worked in Tucson for Horizon Moving Systems.
As a parent, David coached his sons' little league teams--Iroquois, where son Kevin was a player, and the Sugar Bowl Pony League team, where son Michael played (and where David coached the first female player in the league). He also enjoyed golfing and tennis. Once he retired to Tucson he became active in a men's over-60 baseball league, as well as becoming a successful shuffle board player and traveling to Phoenix for competitions. Divorced twenty-five years ago, David enjoyed the last 10 years in Tucson with his companion, Betty Drew. She was with him when he died, along with his favorite caretaker, Shorty Armenta, and his son, Michael Wright, of San Francisco, California. He is survived as well by his son, Kevin, of Palatine, Illinois, and his daughter, Robin (Parker) of Boston, Massachusetts, and four grandchildren.
His remains were cremated and there will be a memorial service in Des Plaines for him this summer.
