Village, IDOT Want Milwaukee Project Done By July

Niles trustees heard an update on the progress of the Milwaukee Avenue Beautification plan from Public Services Director Scott Jochim at their board meeting last week.

The ending date for the project is in some dispute, said Jochim.

Village officials, including Jochim, met with Illinois Dept. of Transportation (IDOT) officials and representatives of project contractor DiPaolo Construction of Glenview.

DiPaolo wanted until September to complete the project.  Jochim said he and IDOT rejected that saying it needed to be completed by July 1.

IDOT and Niles officials demanded a written explanation of why so much more time was needed. That explanation is expected to be received next month.

Work to install water mains, sidewalks and driveways from Touhy Avenue south to Niles' border with Chicago has been completed.

Grinding and reconstruction of the surface of Milwaukee Avenue and installation of crosswalk improvements from Touhy south will begin spring.

Other work still in need of completion includes traffic signal improvements at Milwaukee and Harts Road, Milwaukee and Touhy and Milwaukee and Waukegan Road, and curb replacements and patch work on Milwaukee north of Touhy.
