Glenview Proposes North Maine Water Hike

Glenview village trustees will discuss a possible hike in water rates for the North Maine Water System that serves parts of Maine Township at their next meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 17.

Glenview staffers are recommending an increase from $2.14 to $2.29 for both their fixed 5/8th meter for both water rates and sewer rates and an increase the consumption per 1,000 gallons rate from $7.83 to $8.30 for water and from 87 cents to 91 cents for sewer.

Last January, Glenview increased water and sewer rates from $7.12 to $7.83 per 1,000 gallons. Glenview owns the water utility, purchasing water from the Village of Niles which purchases it from the City of Chicago. Glenview buys water it uses for itself from Wilmette.

The City of Chicago hiked water rates by 14% in January of 2008, 15% in January of 2009 and plans to increase rates again by 15% next January.

Last June a 9.29% increase in the rate Niles charges its residents and to Glenview for water for the North Maine system was approved.  A Glenview spokesperson said the village expects to take in $8,580,046 in North Maine Water System revenues for 2010 and expects to pay $8,287,411 in expenses.  The spokesperson said the water system is not expected to really make a profit as the $300,000 difference in revenues over expenses is needed to keep a 30-day excess fund balance for emergency contingencies.

Trustees will seek public comment at their Nov. 17 meeting that begins at 7:30 p.m. at Glenview Village Hall.
