CROP Walkers Hit Streets Sunday

About 250 people and 11 churches in Niles and Park Ridge are expected to take part in the annual CROP Hunger Walk this Sunday, Oct. 19, to raise funds to fight global poverty.

The 10K route starts and ends at the St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 205 N. Prospect, in Park Ridge. The trek is supposed to be reminiscent of the long treks people in third-world nations have to complete just to assure food and shelter.

Organizers hope to raise $30,000 to combat poverty and hunger through local and international agencies. Of the proceeds, 25% will go to the Maine Township Emergency Food Pantry and 75% will benefit the Church World Service for hungry around the world.

Churches included in the walk are First United Methodist in Park Ridge, Mary Seat of Wisdom in Park Ridge, Messiah Lutheran in Park Ridge, Niles Community Presbyterian, Our Lady of Ransom in Niles, Park Ridge Community Church, Park Ridge Presbyterian, Redeemer Lutheran in Park Ridge, St. Andrews Lutheran in Park Ridge, St. Luke's Lutheran in Park Ridge and St. Mary's Episcopal in Park Ridge.

Registration will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. at St. Luke's, after which the walk will begin.

CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty and similar walks are held at varied times in communities around the country.

Donations can be made to the Friends of Niles-Park Ridge Crop Walk, c/o Sandy Bowen, 1715 Pavilion Way, #302, Park Ridge, IL 60068.
