Police Dept. To Replace 12 Old Squad Cars
Twelve new squad cars are on the way after the Niles Village Board on May 20 agreed to the purchase from Golf Mill Ford.
The 12 Ford Crown Victorias will replace 12 aging units from the police department's fleet. The total cost was $268,659, said Public Works Director Scott Jochim. The local dealership earned the business by besting the price supplied by the State of Illinois.
"They beat the state contract by a couple hundred bucks a car," Jochim said.
The ability of the department to pick the cars up rather than having them shipped from downstate allowed the dealership to save on delivery costs; savings it passed on to the village, he explained.
Either the village will move the old squad cars to other departments, replacing even older units, or it will auction them off, Jochim said.
