Des Plaines firefighters responded to two structure fires that occurred at about the same time on Saturday evening, Feb. 23.

At 5:25 p.m., firefighters were called to 1634 Howard St. for smoke coming from the eaves of a two-unit residential structure. Prior to arriving on that scene, the fire department was dispatched to 100 E. Oakton St. for an automatic fire alarm in the International Paper factory. Crews arrived on Howard to find a well-involved attic fire. Firefighters then arrived on Oakton Street to find a working fire in a paper-rolling machine. The fire was held in check by the sprinkler system.
