A car struck by a Metra train in Des Plaines earlier today (Monday) had lost traction and ended up stuck on the railroad crossing, police have determined.

The car, a silver 2005 Ford Taurus, was trying to turn south onto River Road from westbound Miner Street at 4 p.m. when the vehicle ended up on the tracks, according to Des Plaines police. The driver attempted to back up off the tracks when the railroad gates and signals activated. A Metra train headed west from Chicago struck the front driver side of the Taurus destroying that end of the car.
