MP Parks Finances Improving
By RICHARD MAYER Assistant Managing Editor
The Mt. Prospect Park Dist.’s finances are steadily improving after going through tough times due to the economy, according to Park Dist. CEO Walt Cook.
Park board members approved the 2010 budget last month, which totals $17.39 million, a 1.54% increase over last year. The park district’s budget runs from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31.
Cook said the weather and economic downturn took their toll on the park district but did not put the district in the same dire straits other units of government have seen.
"Typically, our patrons were selective with their purchases and their program registration, all of which is understandable with tight money," said Cook.
In 2008, the park district experienced a deficit of $168,000 in its day-to-day operations fund. This year, those negative monies have been eliminated completely.
The park district started the new year with $3 million in operating fund reserves---30% better than 2009.
Some things the park district is looking forward to the rest of this year include opening a new maintenance garage that will improve operational efficiency, a renovated park at Prospect Meadows that will open this spring, and all four pools being compliant with new federal mandates.
Accomplishments are completed include opening new areas at Melas Park and replacing half of the fitness equipment at RecPlex totaling $80,000.
Cook said there are no layoffs planned in 2010 but he did eliminate three open positions. However, all programs remain in tact and staff has been told to hold the line on expenses this year.
"We continue to accomplish our goals with less staff and funds," said Cook. "We enter 2010 with caution and determination. Optimism is the word for the year."
