MP Native Survives Latest Cuts On 'Idol'

By RICHARD MAYER Assistant Managing Editor

Family and friends of Lee DeWyze watch Thursday's episode of "American Idol" at a Palatine restaurant.

Mt. Prospect resident Lee DeWyze, 23, made it through another week of cuts and is now one of 16 remaining on the television talent show American Idol.

Last night (Thursday), a group of people---including Lee's brother and sister---gathered at a restaurant in Palatine to watch the show and cheer their brother on.

"This is very exciting to see my brother live his dream," said Mike DeWyze, brother. The 19-year-old from Arlington Hts. said he hasn't talked to his brother much since Lee's run on the show began. Two weeks ago, Mike, along with friend and former teacher Amy Silverman, did have the chance to travel Hollywood, Calif., to support Lee during his first live performance.

"I am not sure if I will be heading back anytime soon," Mike told the Journal. "We will have to wait and see."

"We are very proud of him," added his sister Sarah. "He always loved singing." She said she has not yet gone to California to visit Lee, but plans to in the near future.

At the beginning of Thursday's show, approximately 30 people that know DeWyze were glued to a television in the local restaurant.

"Look how nervous he is," commented Silverman prior to results being announced.

Two male singers voted off the show last night were John Park of Northbrook and Jermaine Sellers of Joliet, meaning DeWyze is the only remaining contestant from Illinois.

As soon as host Ryan Seacrest announced DeWyze was safe, the entire group gathered in Palatine, including staff members from his former school, Forest View Alternative School, jumped up, screamed and applauded.

Silverman said she plans to return to California the week of Mar. 22 to be there if DeWyze makes it to the top 10. He will perform live again next Wednesday, Mar. 10.
