Murphy Falls In Primary

Republican Lt. Gov. candidate Matt Murphy did well in the areas surrounding Palatine, where he lives, but lost the primary election to Jason Plummer.

Murphy was trailing Plummer by 5,435 votes Wednesday afternoon. Plummer had 237,036 votes to Murphy's 231,601.

Murphy did better in the Chicago area where he got the majority of votes. He had 13,656 votes in Chicago, 44.97%; 61,541 votes in suburban Cook County, 53.12%; and 20,218 votes in Lake County, 48.1% of the total.

Elected to the Illinois State Senate's 27th District in 2006 and reelected in 2008, Murphy represents portions of Arlington Hts., Buffalo Grove, Mt. Prospect, Palatine and Prospect Hts. and serves as the senate commerce and economic development committee's minority spokesman. He also served on the special committee on impeachment procedure during the scandal that removed former Gov. Rod Blagojevich from office.

Before voters sent Murphy to Springfield, he was elected to the Harper College Board of Trustees. Murphy grew up in Mt. Prospect attending St. Viator High School.
