River Road Nightspot Expected To Re-Open As Restaurant

By RICHARD MAYER Assistant Managing Editor

Citing a decline in the economy, the owner of Accent Café on River Road near Mt. Prospect closed up shop after a private party on Saturday, Jan. 16.

The restaurant/dance club, located in unincorporated Cook County for the past 10 years, has been auctioning off furniture and other novelties since then.

Accent Café manager Peter Oko told the Journal the business is remodeling and will open again within the next few months under a new name with new attire inside.

"We are not sure if it will consist of a nightclub, but it will be a restaurant featuring a variety of different foods open Tuesdays-Sundays," Oko said. He declined to say what the name of the new establishment will be.

The establishment's business and liquor licenses were both registered with Cook County, not the Village of Mt. Prospect. Director of Community Development for Mt. Prospect Bill Cooney said village staff has had informal discussions in the past about annexing that property into the village.

"Our discussions have not been aggressive, but one of the things over the next 12 months will be looking at annexation opportunities that include that area," said Cooney.

The unincorporated area known as Forest River spans over 60 acres, which means annexation cannot be forced by the Village of Mt. Prospect. Residents and property owners must agree to annexation first.

The 60-plus acres are bordered by River Road on the east, Maryville Academy in Des Plaines to the south, Canadian National railroad tracks to the west and Kensington Road on the north.

Mt. Prospect Village Manager Michael Janonis said Forest River is under Cook County Sheriff's Police jurisdiction but receives fire/paramedic assistance from the Mt. Prospect Fire Dept.
