Village Looks Long Term
By RICHARD MAYER Assistant Managing Editor
For the first time in the village's history, Mt. Prospect trustees will develop a long-range strategic plan to ensure financial health, public safety and overall quality of life for residents and businesses in the community for years to come.
"We have never really delved into a strategic plan before," said Village Manager Michael Janonis. Instead of conducting Committee of the Whole meetings every second and fourth Tuesday of each month, there will be times this year when those meetings will be replaced with workshops to work on the strategic plan, which officials hope to have formulated before the end of the year.
"The framework is to set goals and highlight projects that we intend to move forward with," said Janonis.
Janonis said due to recent tough economic times, now is not the time for new initiatives and there will be no talk about opportunities to raise taxes or additional revenue.
Janonis added there could be less Committee of the Whole meetings this year, which are televised, instead replaced with more workshops so trustees can develop goals and initiatives.
Upcoming Committee of the Whole meeting topics include feral cats, potential redevelopment options for the United Airlines property, and looking at the status of previously approved downtown redevelopment.
"At some point, there will be a discussion towards the end of the year in which board members will solicit public input regarding the strategic plan," added Janonis.
