Mt. Prospect's Own Ace Of Cakes

Tammy Montesinos, cake designer at Central Continental Bakery in Mt. Prospect, brought home second place overall in a national cake design competition in Charlotte, North Carolina, Oct. 18-20.

Montesinos, an employee of the bakery for more than 20 years, finished 62 out of 800 points away from first place.

For second place, she received $2,000 in cash and another $1,000 in bakery gifts. She also received medals and a trophy.

Montesinos said she took part in honor of her former boss, Roger Czerniak, who passed away in 2007.

The event spanned two days and featured timed competitions in wedding cakes, sculpted cakes, eight-inch party cakes and other challenges.

This past summer, Montesinos participated in a regional competition in St. Charles and received first place in sculpted cake, party cake, flower theme, eight-inch cake and first place overall. Since Montesinos won the regional competition and placed second in the national competition, she cannot participate for another three years, according to cake design competition rules.

"Overall I am very happy," Montesinos said. "I definitely didn't walk away with nothing."
