Society Expects To Move Central School By Mid-May
Relocating the 1896 Central Schoolhouse in Mt. Prospect is expected to tentatively happen on Saturday, May 17 from its current location at the corner of Wille and Thayer streets to 103 S. Maple St., according to President of the Mt. Prospect Historical Society Marilyn Genther.
Genther said the date could change depending on the weather and if all of the volunteer groups assisting in the move can't make it that day.
Additionally, with Randhurst Shopping Center closer to being demolished to construct a new lifestyle center, the Mt. Prospect Historical Society is beginning to remove its belongings from its approximately 1,500 sq. ft. storage locker located in Randhurst's basement.
Genther said the Society has rented space underneath the mall since 1999.
Some of the items that are currently in the basement include 60 80-year-old desks; an early 1900's piano and radio; farm tools; four large, light fixtures and other items that need to relocated.
Genther said all of those items will be stored at 2-3 different sites.
She said some historical papers will be stored at Chase Bank located next to the mall, other historical papers and paintings will be transferred to the current Education Center on the Society's campus, and the remaining artifacts will be kept in the schoolhouse's basement once it's moved to its new location.
The Historical Society must have all of its belongings removed from the mall's basement no later than July 1.
The Society's lease with Randhurst expired in December, and the mall has allowed the items to remain in its place since then free of charge.
