Man Shot By Police Dies
Cops Say He Made Threats With Sword
Cook County Sheriff's Police fatally shot a 39-year-old unincorporated Glenview man after an hour-long standoff on Sunday, Jan. 24.
Shot was Arturas Kolavas, of the 3200 block of W. Parkway, in the 12 Oaks apartment complex, police said.
Sheriff's Police responding to the report of a domestic dispute shortly before 4 p.m. at a 12 Oaks, located in the 3200 block of Sanders Road, found Kolavas allegedly barricaded inside a second floor apartment. Police said the victim of an alleged domestic altercation with Kolavas fled the apartment and called police.
When police arrived, they said Kolavas refused to leave the apartment, was armed with a large sword, and threatened himself and police. Sheriff's Police then brought in a county hostage team.
After about an hour, police said Kolavas emerged from the apartment threatening police with the sword. Police then shot him once in the chest.
Kolavas was transported to Lutheran General Hospital where he later died.
A Sheriff's Police spokeswoman would not discuss details of the shooting, citing an ongoing investigation of the shooting by the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit.
The name of the victim was released by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
The 12 Oaks apartment complex is located just outside Glenview's borders in unincorporated Cook County.
Glenview police also responded to the scene providing support to Sheriff's Police who were the lead responding agency.
